Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival – June 19 & 20th

Friday, June 18th

Well, Linda and I had an unexpected cameo this morning on City TV. After some chats with the crew when we first arrived, they decided to change their plans and interview us separately from the other crews. They did a great job with the edits on the video clip making it about all of AIAB and not just those they were talking to. Afterwards, many of the TV crew came up for hugs and shared some of their personal stories with us. It was quite a special moment.

At 4:00 pm – A composite group of AIAB members took part in the colourful Opening Blessing Ceremony and the Dotting of the Eye.

Saturday, June 19th

Mayor Gregor Robertson and the City of Vancouver proclaimed this day “Abreast In A Boat Day”

Sunday, June 20th

Congratulations to Abreast with FORT-itude, the winners of the Bronze Medal in the Women’s Recreational B Division!

The AIAB Information Booth was going strong the whole weekend under the expert guidance of Sheila Blair and Bunny Rosse. Thank you to all helping volunteers!

FORT-itude at Rio Tinto/Alcan – June 19th and 20th, 2010

Abreast with FORT-itude participated in the Rio Tinto/Alcan Dragon Boat Festival on June 19th and 20th. It was wonderful! Our first regatta with sunshine! Our tent was next to Abreast Up the Creek and we were able to talk and warm up with old friends and meet new ones. Tracy and Juanita led us in the warm ups and we were a bright pink presence.

A reporter from the Metro Newspaper interviewed our crew and wrote about our message of hope and active lives after breast cancer. Our two novices, Tracey and Neoma were thrilled with the number of participants, spectators, arches of support and wearing a medal. Having the Mayor of Vancouver declare it Abreast In A Boat Day topped off a special weekend.

Watch the following You Tube Videos from this festival including the Guts and Glory races. The Guts and Glory races are a 2 km endurance race for the fastest boats of the day. I believe this race is unique to Vancouver for North America:

Blessing Ceremony (8 min. duration)

Guts and Glory Women (17 min duration)

Guts and Glory Mixed finale with 16 boats in FULL contact

Watch as Absolut Sake gets turned around after being hit from behind. In-water video by others of this rare Vancouver race. Kai Ikaika in boat action!
