Irene passed away on August 8th 2002 at the age of 48.
Irene was born in Edmonton Alta. Growing up, she took an active part in the worship and activities of her family’s parish church. The church became an important part of her life. She studied social work and theology in Saskatoon and Vancouver, then returned to Edmonton for clinical pastoral training. Irene married her husband Terry in 1980 and they had two children, Terry and Jennifer. In 1999 working as a hospital chaplain, she moved with her family to Vancouver to work in the Palliative Care Department of St. Paul’s Hospital.
Irene loved to read and to garden and enjoyed the challenge of learning about the different plants she was able to grow in B.C.
Following her diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer in 2000, Irene joined Abreast In A Boat for the 2001 season paddling out of Deep Cove. She enjoyed the friendship, laughter and hard work of the paddling experience. When her cancer returned and became very aggressive she could no longer paddle but did valiantly serve the team as their drummer for part of the 2002 season.
After a joyful birthday celebration at home with her twin sister on Aug. 6 she returned to St. Paul’s hospital and died peacefully on Aug. 8 in the room across from her office. Irene’s magnetic smile and charm will be with our boat always.
