Believe "It is what gets me through the day. If I didn't have belief I would not have the hope and without hope one may as well give up and that is something I just cannot do." — Anita Bassett Cochrane

In the boat we...Paddle together...Support each other...Learn from one another...Enjoy competition...Overcome fear...encourage others...make true friends...Take pride in our accomplishments...Break the silence of cancer...

“When you push off from the dock… we’re all in the same boat. This isn’t about cancer anymore. It’s about exercise and health and the rest of your life. When we push off we’re paddling away from breast cancer.” — Dr. Don McKenzie, Founder, Abreast In A Boat

If you are a breast cancer survivor interested in new and unique experiences why not join other women in your community working towards living a full, and active life?

Joins us now!

Abreast In A Boat guarantees a fun and challenging opportunity for you to rediscover yourself, a chance to meet new people and to form unique bonds with women just like you. Yes, we dragon boat and compete, but it’s more about the camaraderie amongst fellow survivors. We represent your floating support group, a symbol of hope, and a vivid demonstration that you can have a full and active life after cancer.

We welcome all breast cancer survivors who want to paddle with our organization; we have no age restriction and you do not need to have any previous experience with dragon boating or any other sport. What you do need is to:

  1. Be a breast cancer survivor.
  2. Have completed all treatment, preferably at least six months prior to the beginning of  the paddling season-late March to early July.
  3. Be able to resume an aerobic and strength-training program four months prior to the beginning of the paddling season in consultation with your family physician.
  4. Commit to following AIAB's fitness program, for details view the AIAB Training Guide.
  5. Commit to attending two practices per week during the paddling season.

We recommend all new and interested candidates attend a novice orientation meeting usually held in the Fall.  At this meeting you will learn all about Abreast In A Boat and have an opportunity to ask questions.

AIAB is run by breast cancer survivors for breast cancer survivors.  We understand what you’re going through. If you have any questions or are interested in becoming a member of AIAB, contact Bunny Rosse at newmembers@abreastinaboat.com.
